So you’re thinking about becoming a dog trainer, right?
As a force free dog trainer I’ll help you out with where to get your training to become a dog trainer, from personal recommendations where I’ve completed courses myself, to other organisations that I know other trainers have recommended.
Now to be clear, this is not an exhaustive list, I’d be here all day! And those I’m listing are for dog training only, I will do another post on routes to becoming a dog behaviourist.
The first I’ll start with is the IMDT, the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers by Steve Mann. This is where I did a large chunk of their courses ( most of them in fact! ) and where I got qualified ( with distinction, whoop!)
The route that can be taken is:
- 2 Dayer
- 4 Day Practical
- 2 Day Assessment
However, I would recommend doing some of the other courses too, such as the 1 day perfect puppy. Steve also has a book ‘ easy peasy puppy squeezy’ which is good to swat up on, along with other such as How Dogs Learn, Don’t shoot the Dog and more.
I’ll do another post on books soon.
When you qualify with the IMDT and as long as you have taken the above courses, you’ll get a Level 3 OCN ( Open College Network ) qualification as well as IMDT Membership, and use of the logo, a Facebook support group and some other benefits.
School of Canine Science
Another organisation which I love and has online courses is SOCS – School of Canine Science. Run by Nando Dean, Jo-Rosie Haffenden and Dean Nicholas, they have some fantastic courses. I especially love Puppy Lab, it’s very thorough and will give you so much information.
SOCS has an amazing scentwork course, business in a box ( ready made courses to sell ) 30 Days of canine Science ( so fun to do and really gets you thinking! ) and more, including the lastest Behaviour Bible.
I have completed many other courses from smaller organisations, but my personal experience lies with the above two.
There is the APDT, Into Dogs, ISCP, PACT to name a few and all are worth taking a look into.
You might be wondering what I do?
Well I’m the during and after support network, the Dog Trainer’s NEtwork, helping with mentoring along and after you have become qualified, along with my team and your peers. We help with both dog trainer mentoring and business support.
Till next time!
